This month at the March Market…

What will you buy? Bring the BIG wagon – there is SO much coming to market!

  • Plato’s Harvest Organic Farm

Happy Spring! Well, it feels like it in the greenhouse anyway. And a new season begins…

It looks like some of this snow should disappear this week, making access to the root cellar a bit easier, so I’ll have a little more to bring to this market than last time. I’ll have lots of crisp, delicious carrots, several varieties of potatoes, some turnips and leeks, and lots of eggs. Also, a fresh batch of market money cards, a stack of CSA applications, and the usual charming banter that you don’t get at the local grocery…. :) As always, thanks for your support, and don’t take food from strangers!

    Dave

  • Web of Life Organic Farm

So nice to see a little bit of this snow melting! Maybe spring will indeed be coming! We’ve dug into the greenhouse, and have started onions, beets and greens! We are taking names of folks that are interested in our farm boxes. Stop by our table and we’ll tell you all about it. Thanks to all that came out in the cold and snow to visit us at the last market. Looking forward to seeing you again.
    Meet me at the Market!

  • Brown Boar Farm

We’ll have a limited amount of fresh spring mix, spinach and bok choi as well as a range of storage crops including carrots, beets, watermelon radish, celeriac, potatoes, shallots and parsnips. Plenty of snow here, but it’s springtime in the high tunnel!

Cozy Comfort Food…great by the fireplace…Local Honey Roasted Nuts. Simple delicious and healthy, made with local honey, of course! “The best nuts you’ve ever tasted”! Honey Roasted Rosemary Almonds, Cinnamon Roasted Walnuts and Sweet and Spicy nuts (almonds and cashews): $3.75 per bag or 3 for $10. Hope to see you Thursday at the Market!

This month at the February Market…

What will you buy? Bring the BIG wagon – there is SO much coming to market!

    • Plato’s Harvest Organic Farm

24 days until spring! Sure doesn’t feel like it… but the boxes of seed packets on my table, and bags of potting soil in my driveway beckon me with promises of optimistic possibility…as soon as I can work my way into the quonset igloo that I used to call a greenhouse we’ll start seeding…Those two pictures represent a stark contrast of seasons…

Since there’s not much to be done outside, I’ve been really trying to get on top of paperwork and planning, crop plans, field layout, greenhouse seeding charts, seed orders, organic certification… we’re planning on trying a few exciting new things this year: artichokes and cauliflowers and beef and lamb, and adding a csa distribution in addition to the two markets.

I’m not growing any greens in my hoophouse this winter, trying to starve and freeze the pest population that’s been building up in there the past few years. So I won’t be bringing anything green this week, however, provided I can shovel my way into the root cellar, we’ll have lots of crisp, sweet carrots, potatoes, leeks, turnips and garlic. And eggs. Lots of eggs…

So pack up the reusable bags, strap on the ice cleats, and meet me at the market! Thanks for your support, and don’t take food from strangers…

      Dave

    • Jenny’s Bread

Can you even imagine anything better with a steaming bowl of soup than a thick slice of liberally buttered home made bread? Except maybe a golden cheese bun. You will have your pick this week as I will come prepared with crusty loaves of peasant bread, earthy loaves of anadama bread, and hearty loaves of oatmeal. And, of course, to polish it all of? A double chocolate bun! Just a reminder, all the white flour I use is organic, and all the whole grains are local (except for the oatmeal; it’s organic but not local). I’m looking forward to a basket clean-out of a market this week! Meet me at the market!

      Homemade Crostini
Skip the store bought crackers and make your own crostini! Thinly slice a loaf of peasant bread, brush both sides with olive oil, melted butter or a combo. Season with salt and pepper and some Web of Life garlic powder. Bake 15-20 minutes at 350 until crispy. These go great with a dish of Al’s hot pepper jelly melted over a bar of cream cheese.

Happy New Year! I am finally making the leap to using ORGANIC FLOUR, white flour that it is. I will continue to source my whole grains locally from Four Star Farms, Inc. (who does not use RoundUp on their crops). Just so you know, other organic products I use include sugar, molasses and many of the vegetables I use on my flatbreads (any veggies not organic are from one of our conventional farmers at the Plymouth Farmers’ Market.)

This is going to take some figuring on my part to make it work financially. I am going from spending $18 for 50 fifty pounds of flour to paying around $70 for the same amount. Prices will need to be adjusted along with sizes. I will keep you up to date on all changes as they happen. Thank you for your continued support!

        Recipe Idea: Savory Tarts
Pie crusts aren’t just for dessert. Try this: take out a single pie crust and place it on the counter to warm up a bit (make sure the spot isn’t too warm or will just melt). Preheat oven to 400. Prep your favorite veggie-dice and roast some squash with shallots, saute some hearty greens from Plato’s Harvest or Skinny Dip with garlic powder from Web of Life and Omega olive oil. Allow veggies to cool slightly before proceeding. Roll out crust to about a 9 inch circle (or some variation thereof-shape is not important here!) and cover with veggies leaving a one inch margin all around the edge. Sprinkle with your favorite cheese and bake 20-30 minutes. A simple, healthy local supper!
