January 9th Market News | 2014 Indoor Season

Culinary Insights | Alyson Gregory of Lido Juice Bar | 4:00

Join Alyson Gregory of the market’s newest member, Lido Juice Bar and gain some insights about the insanely delicious and healthy benefits of juicing your favorite local fruits and veggies. Alyson will prepare Lido’s  popular “Bela Lugosi”, featuring beets, carrots, apples and ginger root.

Sprouts | The A-Maize-Ing World of Indian Corn | 3:00-5:30

What has ears but cannot hear and wears a coat of many colors?
An ear of Indian corn, of course! Join Plimoth Plantation’s Museum Educators and discover the a-maize-ing world of Indian corn! Try your hand at making corn flour and take home your very own “corn-y”
masterpiece.

Drop in from 3:00 to 5:30P at the Discovery Center (Best for children ages 3-5.)

Materials Fee: $3 per child or $5 for 2 children (Cash or PFM Tokens Accepted)

Harvest and Cooks Notes


  • Skinny Dip Farm

    From storage we’ll have a wide variety of root vegetables: red, striped and golden beets, super sweet carrots, several varieties of potatoes, watermelon radishes, several types of turnips, sunchokes, garlic and more.
    Fresh from the snowy fields we’ll have leeks and parsnips.
    And from our greenhouse we’ll have a limited supply of green things: kale, chard, and salad greens. Come early for these, they’re precious this time of year, and so delicious!
    All our veggies are certified organic and wicked good.

  • Pain D’Avignon

    Pain D’Avignon’s Executive Chef Matthew Tropeano will prepare a delicious potato leek soup topped with (optional) local house-smoked bacon. Eat-In or Take-Out in quart containers.

    Two types of tartines (French open-faced sandwiches) will also be available: curried chicken salad and fig jam, brie, and arugula.

    Pastry Chef Else Rhodes will be providing French Meat Pies and Pigs in a French Blanket, both baked with a flaky croissant dough.

  • River Rock Farm

    The year started off on a sad note, as our processing facility, Blood Farm ( a 6th generation family business and one of only 2 USDA inspected slaughterhouses in MA), was destroyed by fire on December 29th. As we figure out how to move forward, we will only have frozen cuts available for the time being. We look forward to a brighter new year and are thankful for the support of our customers.

    TRY THIS | Tips for cooking dry-aged beef

    During the dry-aging process, the beef’s juices are absorbed into the meat, reducing the total weight by about 25% but saturating the beef flavor and tenderizing the cut. We recommend cooking your dry- aged steak for 25% – 35% less time than a normal steak. This is because of the decreased amount of moisture in the steak. You will notice that the beef cooks faster and does not shrink down. The beef will have a lot of flavor on its own and does not require much more than a little salt and pepper right before cooking. Enjoy!
